WHAT THE . . .?
Balloons
Landing in Merrimack, NH
neighborhoods on Saturday November 20, 2004.

| Flights
began from Bedford just
after sunrise and the last of the
several balloons landed in Merrimack just before 9 AM. Bedford and Merrimack citizens were surprised Saturday morning by a flock of hot air balloons cruising just above the treetops. Many residents awoke to the sounds of propane torches used to heat up the air by which these giant balloons fly. The flights, which began in Bedford, ended in several Merrimack neighborhood driveways and backyards between 8AM and 9AM. |

Occasionally, this means meeting startled people, though often results in new friendships. Traditionally, after a flight has successfully landed, participants break out the champagne and toast their adventure, often times sharing glasses with their new found friends. As was the case this Saturday morning in Merrimack. |

Once
airborne
balloonists are at the mercy of the
prevailing winds which carry them across the landscape. Followed by Balloon Recovery Ground Crews they communicate today via cell phones and walkie talkies.
Flight times vary
depending on the
temperature and weather conditions.

|
| Traditionally balloonists fly during the early mornings as dawn breaks and often just as the sun sets. The air temperatures are perfect for ballooning during these periods. | Once the ambient air reaches a certain temperature it becomes more and more difficult to maintain altitude. Therefore, it is not unusual for balloonists to set down in the nearest available clear space. |
